Symbols in the Stones
Long before the Picts, stone was used to make powerful statements about societies. Stone circles, monoliths, cairns and cists were all created by the predecessors of the Picts.
So for the Picts, working in stone was not something new, but what was radically different was the way in which they did it.
The Picts fashioned monolithic standing stones and carved them with animals, objects and abstract designs, quite unlike anything else found in Britain and in Europe.
